This paper presents a synthesis of conclusions from two edited volumes currently under preparation for publication. The first is entitled The Production of Alternative Urban Spaces: An International Dialogue and presents empirically grounded case studies from around the world in relation to three overarching themes: (1) alternative urban spaces of work, exchange, and consumption; (2) alternative urban spaces of dwelling; and (3) alternative urban spaces of public life. The second book carries the title Enabling Urban Alternatives: Crises, Contestation, and Cooperation and includes a mixture of conceptual and empirical pieces that reflect four different perspectives on processes of enabling alternative urban futures: (1) thinking the urban differently; (2) governing the urban differently; (3) performing the urban differently; and (4) producing the urban differently. Both books reflect cross-disciplinary, critical perspectives encompassing urban geography, planning and urban design, urban sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. In relation to the call, the emphasis of the paper is primarily directed towards the first dimension: “counter-hegemonic forms of urban living and practice that are alternative in relation to mainstream models and trends”, and the last question posed: “What are the temporalities and spatialities of alternative urban thought and practice, and how is this reflected in or distinct from local and global political, economic or cultural hegemonies?”
