The evolution of China's online thematic cartography in a smart city context

Considering the challenges which is brought to cartography by new media in the context of smart city, such as the complexity of new cartography object, the expansion size of map data and the diversity of user application requirements, the paper discusses the pattern evolution of online thematic cartography based on China's Internet Plus strategy and application development practices.

This paper focuses technical connotation turn of map making innovative thinking, and puts forward a new methodology support for traditional cartography, devotes to establish a "fast path" between statistical data and thematic maps, and builds a web-based integrated manufacturing environment of cartography from "raw data” to "map products", which serves for seamless integration of map making and map using.

Meanwhile it overcomes three key technical problems: construction of cartographic knowledge base, generation of dynamic map symbol, and design paradigm of participatory cartography, and builds mechanism of adaptive personal map space.

And it summarized and put forward four patterns of online participatory thematic cartography: subscription-based cartography, order-based cartography, customized based cartography and intelligent based cartography, the basic meaning and characteristic of which are explained in depth.
