Regional environmental change caused by dramatical urban expansion has become a critical environmental issue in many metropolitan areas around the world. The land use change in urban area not only amplifies urban heat island effect, but also influences the ecosystem service in the vicinity. Previous studies have indicated that wetland ecosystem could sufficiently adjust the microenvironment, but very few attentions are given to the role of wetland ecosystem in the metropolitan area. In the past decades, the coverage of Xixi wetland in Hangzhou, China has significantly decreased by six folds and has led the dramatic temperature increase in this area. The objective of this study is to quantify the relationship between the shrink of Xixi wetland coverage and the dynamics of urban thermal environment in Hangzhou, and further evaluate the change of comfort index in the past decades. To resolve the abovementioned questions, this study used ENVI to derive the surface temperature based on Landsat images. Then, the index of cold island effect is estimated from 2000 to 2015. Finally, the change of comfort index in Hangzhou is quantified by using several environmental and meteorological factors in the study period. The results from this study could sufficiently provide important knowledge background for urban planning and environmental management for Hangzhou and in many other metropolitan areas under severe urban expansion.
