Geography education in Japan is decided according to the National Curriculum Standard, however, what kind of contents are emphasized when it is converted into teaching materials? In this presentation, the author would like to share the results of analysis of textbooks of social studies and geography in the secondary education.
Here the author focuses on questions and skills included in the textbooks, she introduced text mining method to analyze all contents of questions and skills parts in the textbooks. Textbooks for the analysis were selected the one with the highest market share among middle and high schools.
In junior high school, there is a large tendency to ask the work of reading the texts in the textbook to search for important points, summarize, think and examine. Students learn about both foreign countries and Japan, but the items related to Japan got higher scores. Many maps and the atlas come out in Geography for junior high and Geography A of senior high school. In Geography A, there are more tasks of reading texts, maps, graphs and figures. Many work comes up thinking, examining, and summarizing from materials. More places came up as keywords. In Geography B, more keywords to ask to explain the reasons as a result of understanding the text, map or figures.
