Spatial Data Mining of Settlements Distribution in China Based on Multi-dimension Analysis

from residential point to town to city and city group, it is the spatial expression of human aggregation. How to mine these spatial distribution characteristics and scientifically guide the future human habitation behavior is a specific challenging problem. we used voronoi diagrams and nearby analysis based on GIS data to analyze spatial distribution characteristic of city, county, and township settlements in China. We added factors including topography, climate, economy, developing model, major rivers, and roads and mined the cause of settlements spatial distribution. Our analysis indicates that pentagon-hexagon-heptagon-shaped cities, counties, and townships reflect stable development polygonal structure under homogeneous conditions. Heterogeneous condition areas are mostly comprised of other polygon shapes like triangles, quadrilaterals, octagons, nonagons, and decagons. Urban spatial development layouts create stable pentagon-hexagon-heptagon shapes, supporting the development of medium and small cities. We found that the settlement distribution has obvious Chinese characteristics. Topography, climate, economy, and development model are the main factors that affect city development in 5000 years, yet major rivers and roads affect county and township settlements. These findings will serve as a reference for regional development planning.
