The knowledge of society’s response to varying climate in the past provides insightful information for the human society to get better prepared against the changing climate and landscapes. We present a case study in South India to demonstrate the potential causation of climate and the response options that shaped the rise and economic prosperity of the Chola Kingdom during 850-280 CE. The future climate adaptation planning has to consider the lessons from the past for being better prepared, as re-occurrence of centuries of wet North-East Indian monsoon rainfall periods or intensive rainfall episodes like 2015 may be possible in the future.
