We present an estimate of agricultural land ‘used’ by China in sub-Saharan Africa based on imports of agricultural products from the region. These estimates are then combined with China’s state-owned agricultural investments and farms across the region to provide an overall picture of agricultural land in use by China. Our analysis focuses on the crops represented by the majority of the land; the country China uses the most land in; and, how this land use has changed over time. Finally, we investigate the relationship between potential economic, social, and environmental drivers and China’s land use in the region.
