The expansion and intensification of human activities have increasingly threatened the maintenance of natural habitat and biodiversity globally and regionally. Many efforts have been carried out to halt or at least alleviate biodiversity loss. Among these efforts, the restoration of degraded habitat quality in NRs is essential to improve the conservation efficiency of biodiversity. Accordingly, this paper aims to spatially prioritize areas for habitat restoration in natural reserves on the Qinghai Plateau, which is the core component of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau with unique and fragile plateau ecosystem, and diverse endemic fauna and flora. We evaluated the habitat degradation and quality using the InVEST biodiversity model. Then a modeling scenario was built to identify the changes of habitat degradation and quality among these NRs. Based on the current status and simulated changes of habitat degradation and quality, habitat restoration priority index was calculated. Hotspot analysis was applied using different clustering methodology to spatially prioritize areas for habitat restoration in NRs on the Qinghai Plateau. The results indicate that: (i) spatial pattern of habitat quality and degradation related to the location and intensity of the human-induced impacts; (ii) different hotspots were identified when using different spatial clustering methodology. Accordingly, the proposed approach may be used to strengthen the conservation efforts in similar contexts, and thus support the implementation of the biodiversity related policies over the long term.
