Patterns and Trends in Lake Ice Phenology.: a Meta Analysis

Lake ice is sensitive to climate variation. lake ice phenology parameters such as freeze onset(FO),freeze up(FU),break onset(BO),break up(BU) and ice duration(ID) are key to better understand climate change and variability. Recent research shows that the timing of lake ice BU advanced, However, there also some research shows that BU was delayed. Therefore, it is necessary to do a comprehensive analysis to fully understand how the phenology of the lake ice changes under the background of climate warming. In this study, the scientific papers including article, review were indexed in the ISI web of science database.The indexed keywords include "lake ice" and "climate change". There total 981 papers were retrieved. We record the geographical location of lake and the lake ice phenology parameters in each article, use GIS software to visualize the research hot spots and phenology parameters,and then analyzed the relationship between phenology shift with lake area, latitude, altitude using GeoDetector software. It is shown that the main research area of the lake ice phenology is the northern hemisphere and mid-high latitudes area. There are more studies on the north America and Europe, but less in Asia although there are more than 1,100 alpine lake in Asia. It is also shown that in vast majority lake the timing of ice BU was significantly advanced, there are only few lake in which the BU was delayed, such as Namu Co lake in Tibet Plateau.
