Historical Administrative Maps of the Czech Republic: A Case Study of the Conceptual and Quantitative Merit of Historical GIS

Historical GIS (HGIS) is a relatively young subfield of geography linking historical geography and Geographic Information Systems, in which historical information is analyzed and visualized within its geographic context and managed using geospatial techniques and databases. HGIS scholarship includes studies on the collection, storage, and management of historical spatio-temporal data within Geographic Information System databases as well as the use of GIS to map and visualize historical information. In spite of the time-consuming nature of creating HGIS databases, progress has been made in their development, contributing to the subfield of HGIS and the qualitative and quantitative impacts it has had on historical geography. The Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre (CUZK) Geoportal is a comprehensive collection of spatial data, metadata, and information on the Infrastructure for Spatial InfoRmation in Europe guidelines used, through datasets and web applications produced and maintained by different CUZK subdivisions. The State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre in the Czech Republic maintains an archive of historic and current maps of various detail and scale, from as early as the first half of the 19th century, and makes them available for public use. From these collections, including military maps and historic topo maps, land features can be extrapolated with spatial information. This project examines the CUZK HGIS databases on the Geoportal as an illustration of how HGIS data, specifically historical maps, can be used in land use research, and how GIS contributes quantitative and qualitative value to both historical geography and history research.
