Description

The AAG-Esri GeoMentors program is a growing nationwide network of over 1,600 volunteers who support K-12 schools, clubs, and informal education groups to incorporate geography and GIS in their curricula and activities with students. GeoMentor activities vary widely in subject matter, audience level, technology used, and duration as each community, school, classroom, or group have unique interests and needs that volunteers adapt to fit best. This adaptive approach to engaging a variety of audiences has generated hundreds of unique examples of geography education outreach that can serve as information, inspiration, or content for additional public and school outreach elsewhere. In this session, GeoMentors will share their own volunteer experiences, describing the context (location, audience, and collaborators), content (topic, technology, activity), process (from connecting with schools to developing/implementing activities), and lessons learned. Following the brief presentations, there will be time for participants and attendees, current GeoMentors and potential new GeoMentors, to interact and discuss the program and strategies for geography education outreach.
