There is a long tradition in geography of linking relational and physical spaces. Our ways of examining social-spatial interactions are increasingly transformed by the development of more powerful computing technologies, emerging (big and open) data sources, and new perspectives on social-spatial processes. New opportunities emerge as we are able to model interactions between social and physical spaces at multiple spatial and temporal scales and with very fine granularity (e.g., focusing on individual people and/or buildings). Spatial and social network analyses also correspond to the notions of ‘space’ and ‘place’, respectively. Moreover, beyond academia, government agencies, practitioners, as well as engaged citizens are increasingly recognizing the linkages between social space and physical environment. Nevertheless, much discussion has been devoted to how developments in social network and spatial analyses have separately contributed to our understanding of geography. A discussion of how spatial and social network analyses could be synthesized has oftentimes been missed from the debate. This session aims to critique and reflect upon this lacuna.
We invite papers that explore spatial-social networks and develop integrated analyses of relational and physical spaces. Networks can be at the levels of aggregate flows (city to city/place to place) and disaggregate flows (person to person) that are embedded in space. The analysis could explore a variety of networks, such as human movement flows, infrastructure networks, telecommunications interactions, social media connections, and traditional social networks. This session promotes analyses that focus on both the network traits, and the underlying geography, as part of an interacting system.
