Description

Geospatial big data pose unprecedented challenges and opportunities for knowledge discovery. While extensive work has been conducted on data-driven geography, spatial analytics for big data needs to be established on data-intensive high-performance computing (HPC). The most powerful HPC resources are projected to reach "exascale" within a decade. Spatial analytics at such a scale and beyond will require a large array of new theories, methods, and tools to be developed for geographic knowledge discovery based on big data. In this context, cyberGIS (aka geographic information science and systems based on advanced cyberinfrastructure) has emerged as a vibrant interdisciplinary field for bridging data-intensive HPC with various geospatial domains.

As part of the AAG 2018 Symposium on CyberGIS and Spatial Data Science, this session invites papers in innovative data-intensive HPC approaches to spatial analytics. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
• Cutting-edge data-intensive HPC environments
• Future directions of spatial analytics for big data
• Spatial data science drivers for data-intensive HPC
• Geographic theories and methods for big data analytics
• Novel applications of data-intensive HPC for geographic knowledge discovery
• Recent progress on cyberGIS hardware, software, and tools
