Description

In 2011, sociologist George Lipsitz wrote his seminal work, How Racism Takes Place. Through this book, Lipsitz provides a historical analysis of black spatialization in urban spaces. Using a geographical lens, Lipsitz evaluates the role that racialization has in creating distinctive black spatial imaginaries. Through this work, Lipsitz describes this action as purposeful in its intent to control the physical, symbolic and visceral geographies of African Americans. This panel seeks papers that build upon and create new conversations concerning race, place-making, and space.

The author will serve as a discussant on the panel.

Some of the topics might include:

· Housing Segregation

· The rise of segregation in post-war America
