Continued urbanization worldwide and its environmental impacts have caught great attention in the remote sensing community and beyond. Urban remote sensing as an enabling method has been widely applied in the past decades to address these issues. Group on Earth Observation (GEO) started a program on Global Urban Observation and Information (GUOI) in 2012, and has reshaped it as a GEO Initiative for its 2017-2019 work plan. Essentially, the activities of participating organizations and countries are coalesced as one program through collaborative and affiliated projects, annual symposia, international summer school, publications, and coordinated user engagement efforts. GUOI aims to generate various data products for global urban areas using Earth Observation (EO) data, to provide EO-based urban data services through various systems and tools, to develop new models and algorithms to assess and monitor urban environments, and to develop essential urban variables and indicators for sustainable cities for the UN SDG 11.
This is the fourth year GEO GUOI utilizes AAG annual meeting as the platform for a symposium. By organizing this event, it is hoped to create an opportunity for intensive discussion among current leaders and potential contributors, to provide stimulations to interested students and young researchers to join the GEO intuitive, and to foster urban remote sensing researches. In 2018, we especially welcome papers and presentations addressing the following topics:
• Societal benefits of urban remote sensing;
• Essential EO-based urban variables and indicators to support sustainable cities;
• Urban infrastructures (impervious surfaces, roads, buildings) and urban hazards;
• Ecosystem structures and functions of cities and their hinterlands in the coastal/wetland regions;
• Gaps and needs in the integration of EO with in situ data as well as social media data.
