Description

Urban areas are now the home of more than half of the world’s population. The ongoing process of urbanization has profound impacts not only on the way cities develop, but also on the functioning of ecosystems and the services they provide to humans and other life on Earth. This thematic session serves as a forum for researchers to exchange the current development in understanding the linkages between urban growth and the ecology of landscapes especially through spatially explicit approaches. Topics include but are not limited to:
(1) Spatio-temporal patterns of changing urban landscapes and the underlying socio-biophysical drivers;
(2) Ecological and environmental consequences of urbanization;
(3) Impacts of urban growth on ecosystem services;
(4) Ecological sustainability assessment in urban areas;
(5) Methodological issues in urban growth studies; and
(6) Regional case studies on urban growth and its ecological impacts.
