In this paper, we consider the interaction of recent geographic and urban theories around the idea of urban and the ‘elsewhere’. Guided by bibliometric analysis, five major urbanization communities of Urban-rural linkages, Teleconnections/ Telecoupling, Planetary Urbanization, World Cities and Territoriality/Relationality have emerged. These communities are bounded by the ways in which urban theories picture interconnectedness of urban and elsewhere through different flows, and each includes multiple urban theories but can be traced to a common intellectual lineage. We then review the scholarly literature on each of these urban theories and conclude that the interconnection of urban and elsewhere through resource flows has not been well defined in the literature. We also propose a framework of urbanization theories and resource flows interconnectedness as a way of identifying a common language for urban research.
