The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) calls for strengthening the cooperation and coordination among global observing systems and research programs for integrated global observations. In the GEO 2012-2015 Plan, a Global Urban Observation and Information Task was included, considering the needs to assess human settlements and activities and to understand better the impacts of urbanization. This GEO Task implemented the following goals for the period of 2012-2015: (1) improving the coordination of urban observations, monitoring, forecasting, and assessment initiatives worldwide; (2) supporting the development of global urban observation and analysis systems; (3) producing up-to-date information on the status and development of the urban system; (4) filling existing gaps in global urban observation with in situ data; and (5) developing innovative techniques in support of urban remote sensing. For the period of 2017-2019, GEO GUOI continues to carry on and re-focus the urban related activities through international collaboration and cooperation as a new initiative. In addition, the GUOI Initiative focuses on developing essential urban variables and indicators for sustainable cities to serve the UN SDGs. This talk will address this new frontier in EO technology by discussing: (1) recent advances in urban observation sensors; (2) techniques for synthetic use of various sensors to enhance urban remote sensing with respect to spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution, mapping and analysis; and (3) EO based essential urban variables and indicators for sustainable cities.
