The HWISE data set includes more than 7000 household-scale surveys conducted in 29 locations in the Global South. This rich resource reveals much about preferences for different water technologies in different locations with respect to both quantitative water access (via wells, rainwater harvesting, etc.) and water quality management (via boiling, filtering, shock chlorination, etc.). In this paper some broad contours of the hydrotechnology story are revealed.
