Time geography was introduced to Japan in the mid-1970s and the full-scale study started in the late ‘80s when “Time Geography Study Group” was formed by young scholars. The study group published the Japanese translation of anthology of important time-geographic works and started the empirical researches in Japan. This chapter examines how the time-geographic investigation rose related with the societal context of Japanese metropolises at that time and what it brought the society and academia in Japan.
