3D VR BIM modeling- Exploring and Managing Interior Campus Space at West Chester University

Students and faculty from the West Chester University Center for GIS and Spatial Analysis are developing a 3D Building Information Model, employing Virtual Reality tools and iBeacon sensors, of our College of Business and Public Management Center for facilities management, planning, and public safety. Using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ESRI CityEngine, and Unreal Engine software, this building has been modeled, with traffic captured using iBeacon sensors. The building was modelled by importing AutoCAD layers into ArcGIS Pro, then converting and editing the layers into room, hallway, etc. features. The 3D model was imported into CityEngine then added into our existing Virtual Reality model of campus. After embedding this into our existing 3D model of campus, evacuation routing has been modeled, to a specific office, building resources have been scheduled, emergency scenarios tested, and a walk through of the building, created. We deployed iBeacon sensors to test traffic and real time location. We are using this model to demonstrate and discuss cost and opportunity to deploy this across campus. Resulting models are presented via 3D web scenes, a Samsung Gear VR scene, and as an HTC VIVE gaming model.
