The presentation provides an introduction to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)-delineated metropolitan, micropolitan, and related statistical areas. It begins by describing major aspects of the 2010 standards published by OMB to delineate the statistical areas as well as relevant terminology related to the standards. The presentation then examines the components of the statistical areas and provides information and guidance on items such as codes, titling of areas, abbreviation of terms, and methods of ranking. The presentation provides examples of uses of metropolitan, micropolitan, and related statistical areas in U.S. Census Bureau data products. OMB leads the review of the standards each decade. The review of the 2010 standards is currently under way.
