The presentation aims to offer a discussion about the genesis of vilas de maloca (the local name for shantytowns) in the city of Porto Alegre-RS in the South of Brazil in the early 1950s. Two scholarly works seem to have been published with this tittle during this period: A paper by Leônidas Soares de Machado and Raul Rego Faillace named Vilas de malocas e vilas de habitações populares (Shantytowns and Low-Cost Housing Ensembles), presented in 1951 in the nineth Brazilian congress of hygiene (Faillace & Machado, 1951) and the book by Laudelino Teixeira de Medeiros (1914-1999) entitled Vilas de malocas: ensaio de sociologia urbana (Shantytowns: Essay of Urban Sociology) published in the following year (Medeiros, 1952). Why the interest in this subject during these years? What was the content of these writings? Who were these authors and why were they interested in this subject, which was never researched before? My presentation will try to bring elements to answer these questions.
