Tourism, due to its enormous growth over time, has become a very important sector for China's economic and social development. In recent years, Chinese outbound tourism has become increasingly linked to China's national diplomacy, thus appearing the term "tourism diplomacy", which is gaining increasing attention from both public policy makers, academic researchers and actors in the tourism sector. This article intends to identify the role of Chinese outbound tourism in the context of the development of Chinese diplomacy through a presentation of the evolution of tourism diplomacy, as well as the analysis of several associated public policies. The present work adopts the qualitative method and it suggests that we should pay more attention to the political aspect of outbound tourism, as it can be a useful tool to improve international relations, for example, in the case of China.
