This study explores how university students solve problems through spatial thinking within a web-based GIS mapping environment. 20 sophomores utilized a web tool to analyze possible causes for various geographic phenomena. The process of solving this problem for each student was recorded and coded. Results show students adopt different types of strategies for spatial analysis within a web-based mapping environment. Implications of the findings and recommendations for the future research will also be discussed.
