Understanding the Land Use/Land Cover Change (LULC) Process in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal.

Land use/land cover (LULC) has been changing at an unprecedented rate. Most of the LULC changes have been attributed to human activities. The increase in global population is a major reason for the modification of LULC through urbanization. This growth has significantly impacted natural ecosystems and changed land cover. The Kathmandu Valley, located in Nepal, is the most rapidly growing region in the country. The lack of free space is considered as one of the reasons for the high death toll in the 2015 earthquake that occurred in the valley. Information about land use and land cover change is necessary for optimal distribution of natural resources, and remote sensing technology can provide rapid and precise information about the extent of land cover change. Landsat data (TM, ETM+, and OLI) from1990, 2000, 2010 and 2017 will be acquired and used to evaluate LULC changes and urban expansion in Kathmandu Valley. The images will be classified according to the maximum likelihood classification approach. The land cover type identified from the field observations using a precise GPS unit will be used to train the software (ENVI) to generate the spectral signature profile of each land cover type. Preliminary results indicate that there has been a significant increase in urban area. Early indications are, that there is a positive correlation between urban expansion and forest/agricultural land. This study will be useful to support land use planning in the Kathmandu Valley, such as the allocation of free spaces and implementation of proper zoning codes.
