The ongoing global urbanization is imposing tremendous pressure on the eco-environment. Urbanization and eco-environment are two systems which may influence each other. Researching on the coupling of eco-environment and urbanization is important to the sustainable development of urban agglomeration area. Taking Wuhan Metropolitan Area which includes 9 cities as a case, this paper performed an empirical study to uncover the interactive coupling relationship between eco-environment and new-type urbanization in urban agglomeration area from the perspective of eco-environment carrying capacity. The eco-environment carrying capacity evaluation index system was set up using the pressure-state-response (PSR) model and then the coupling model was built. The results show that the eco-environment carrying capacity in Wuhan Metropolitan Area is generally good and it has three types which are relatively poor, average and relatively good. The eco-environment carrying capacity shows different spatial distribution characteristics in the three dimensions of pressure, state and response. The quality of new-type urbanization in the 9 cities in Wuhan Metropolitan Area shows spatial heterogeneity significantly, which means that they are in an uneven status of development. There are significant differences in Coupling relationship between eco-environment carrying capacity and new-type urbanization level of the Wuhan Metropolitan Area, which can be classified into five types: the moderate coordinated development, the elementary coordinated development, the reluctant coordinated development, the edge of maladjustment and the mild maladjustment. Therefore, this paper proposes corresponding policies from the aspects of coordinating the industrial division, focusing on the eco-environment carrying threshold and strengthening policy guidance.
