This presentation will explore the urban regeneration program in Hubei old village (Shenzen). Many Chinese cities are experiencing expansion at the urban edge and regeneration of their “urban villages” (rural villages encircled and swallowed up by an expanding city) in its downtown core. Shenzhen, as one of the earliest industrialized cities in China, has undergone an accelerated rate of urban renewal in its urban villages located in the city centre, and thus is an interesting site to consider the dynamics of urban villages in China due to their (once) numerous presence. Using Hubei old village in Shenzen as an example, this presentation will attempt to unpack the negotiations between different stakeholders within the urban planning process.
