The opioid epidemic in the United States is a complex issue with no easy, long-term solutions. This paper examines how the epidemic is inherently an Appalachian problem, how Appalachia is overlooked in the broader terms of the epidemic, the ongoing programs and policies that endeavor to curb the epidemic, and the personal experience of a native Appalachian that lives and breathes the tragedy wrought by the epidemic.
