This study is regarding Dissolved Organic Carbons (DOCs) concentrations in the Chippewa river, of Eastern Michigan. This is the subject of my Master’s research and an ongoing project. The poster will include a model flow chart and provide background on the importance and relevance of Riverine Dissolved Organic Carbons as applied to land use. Riverine Dissolved Organic Carbons are important in many fields such as: Climatology - Dissolved Organic Carbons are a contributor to atmospheric carbon; Water Sanitation - certain sanitation processes include chemicals which bind to Dissolved Organic Carbons to create harmful compounds; Recreation - Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) reduced visibility in the water and makes certain sites less suitable for recreation. These are only a few applications of Dissolved Organic Carbons modeling, which will be explored in my submission. The poster will include graphs, figures and relevant images. The method of modeling will be ArcGIS based, primarily using ArcSWAT and Model Builder. As this is an ongoing study, conclusions are still being obtained. Results are expected to show a difference between primary land use groups of Urban, Agricultural, and Forested basins. This output will be useful in decision making and modeling of past and future Dissolved Organic Carbon concentrations in various land use applications, with a focus on agricultural watershed basins. This study will also include multivariate analysis of watershed components to determine the key factors of DOC concentration.
