Impact of land use on bicycling behavior:An spatial approach to provide insight to land use-health interaction

Bicycling should be a remedy of traffic congestion and air pollution in cities worldwide, and various factors have been connected with bicycling behavior for urban management. However, few studies have examine bicycling behavior from the perspective of land use regarding newly emerging free-floating bike sharing(FFBS). Based on extended literature review, we propose a theoretical framework for understanding of mechanistic links. An aggregated panel data was crawled from FFBS in Shenzhen for 191 days. We have obtained bicycling frequency, travel duration, and riding distance, to be proxies of bicycling behavior. Land use features related to bicycling are comprehensively indicated by a set of standardized land use variables including land use types, land use mix and land use connections. Panel spatial model is applied to quantify the associations at district level with socioeconomics controlled. Results show that number of stations, density of road network, land use mix, percentage of commercial land and green land are the key determinants, while residential land and bicycle lane only affect bicycling behavior on weekdays. The variance decomposition (VD) is further adopted to isolate the relative importance and it demonstrates that bicycling frequency is largely determined by land use mix, percentage of public green space contributes most to travel duration and riding distance. This study makes an effort to assess the influence of land use on bicycling behavior and provides insight for sustainable land use-health interaction.
