This research explores opportunities for improving instruction in geography education through augmented reality (AR) and smartphone devices. Augmented reality is an emerging technology in private industry and civic life. The popularity of apps like Pokémon Go opens possibilities for educational apps that bring similar levels of excitement to classrooms. HP Reveal is a user-friendly app that allows students to create their own AR spaces. Over the course of three years, the author incorporated HP Reveal in the Advanced Placement (AP) Human Geography classroom. This tool aided students in preparation for course assessments by helping to illuminate and connect geographic concepts and skills. Ultimately, the students exhibited positive attitudes toward using augmented reality and scored above the global average on the final AP exam. This exploratory research will be expanded to inform how to scaffold AR instruction and assess the applicability and transferability among high school geography classrooms. The goal of this poster is to identify research questions and methods related to geographic education and augmented reality.
