Visualization in Smart Cities applications is a crucial part as it is the main communication tool among scientists, engineers and decisions makers. The data used in such approaches is directly linked to spatial objects such as buildings, city infrastructure or city furniture. Usually, these data sets are not aggregated by the building object itself but at a finer scale such as building surfaces or even at a finer scale (e.g. location of sensors). This requires a higher grade of visualization and therefore 3D becomes a necessity. Interactive 3D visualization of those datasets have been successfully implemented enabling users to explore and comprehend outcomes from multiple perspectives.
Multiple interactive 3D visualization environments such as ESRI’s City Engine or CESIUM web globe exist that facilitates the development of interfaces. Besides these more traditional desktop and web oriented platforms, recent years have seen an increase in the development of immersive technologies as well as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications developed for many different urban use cases. Progressively more APIs and Tools such as Unity3D as well as recent developments such as the native support on mobile devices through ARKit (Apple) and ARCore (Android) enable the GIScience community to develop and test new visualization methodologies.
This session seeks presentations focusing on the innovative visualization of urban data in the Smart Cities context. Possible topics for presentation may include but are not limited to:
• 3D and 4D visualization interfaces
• Augmented Realty (AR)
• Virtual Reality (VR)
• Integration of GIS in immersive environments (AR, VR and 3D)
• Immersive spatial-temporal visualization interfaces
• Cartographic methods and standards for 3D and immersive visualizations
• Data Infrastructures and standards for the visualization for 3D urban data
• Integration of analytical functionality in 3D and immersive visualization
• Human Computer Interaction (HCI) in 3D and immersive visualization environments
• Integrating sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) into immersive visualizations
• Innovative visualizations of urban infrastructure (e.g. underground infrastructure)
