Description

Many geographers work in institutions where they experience a bit more precarity and many geographers are overlooked. In some cases, they may be the sole geographer at the university, working with colleagues who are not familiar with our discipline. In other cases, they may be at the front lines at a community college, with a heavy teaching load and sparse resources for travel and research. Or they may be a geographer at an historically black or historically Indian college The AAG exists to serve all geographers in the United States and the world. One area where we think there may be room for some improvement is in the engagement of geographers in these types of institutions. True, there are stand- alone geography and a community college affinity groups, but these can be isolated among themselves. We are setting up this series of panels to ask the questions of how to improve the participation and validation of geographers at smaller institutions with fewer resources and of geographers who find themselves alone within their universities. Several themes will be addressed in these sessions, including teaching, networking, scholarship. The goal is to share strategies that representatives have developed in response to these unique challenges and to identify potential actions that that could be pursued by our professional organizations to increase participation and validation.
