Description

In this panel, Geography faculty members from both University of New Mexico (UNM) and New Mexico State University (NMSU) will discuss the nation’s newest PhD program in Geography: the New Mexico Joint Doctoral Program in Geography. The NMJDP is slated to launch in Fall 2020 after almost a decade of planning and program design, and we are excited to announce this new program to the geography community. Panelists will explain the program’s choice to focus on “Integrative Human-Environment Dynamics” and will outline the planned curriculum to support this focus across two campuses. In both prepared remarks and in a Q&A session, panelists will discuss the structural, pedagogical, political, and financial contexts that led to the final design choices for this innovative new program. Specific program commitments to be highlighted include:
(a) interdisciplinary research training
(b) mixed quantitative-qualitative methodologies
(c) creative distance learning techniques to spur engagement across both campuses
(d) pedagogies that merge theory + praxis
(e) community-engaged research
(f) preparing students for a variety of multiple career paths
