Blue Collar Scholarship 3 - Institutional Interventions
In recent years, colleges and universities across the academy have made a concerted, if somewhat belated, effort to provide better support services for so-called “first gen” students. Typically programs designed to support first-generation cohorts are run by student service professionals on campus, but the growing size and scope of such efforts beg the question of whether faculty who were themselves first-generation college students might play a more meaningful role in the process.
Identifying openly with first-generation undergraduates is one of several potential outlets for faculty (including graduate instructors) who self-consciously draw upon working-class backgrounds, or firsthand experiences of poverty, to inform choices they make in and through their scholarship. The proposed series of roundtable discussion panels is designed to explore the potential for practicing “Blue Collar Scholarship” in the discipline. We are particularly interested in approaches that turn supposed “disadvantaged” backgrounds into sources of insight, intuition and inspiration in classroom teaching, advising and mentoring students, selecting research topics and implementing related methodologies, and/or engaging the wider world as scholar/activists.
