Description

In this double panel, we propose the concept of ‘agrarian urbanism’ to explore the unprecedented rural-agrarian transformation that has accompanied rapid urbanization in Asia. Focusing mostly on peripheral urbanization as it has taken shape in the far and near edges of Asia’s metropolitan cities, the panel draws attention to the multi-scalar transformations that extend beyond the city and forge a conversation between urban studies and agrarian studies. In engaging with the debates on planetary urbanization and comparative urbanisms, the aim of the panel is to understand the changing question of land and agrarian property regimes and gain an understanding of how rural and urban geographies are coproduced in predominantly agrarian societies. The papers in the panels engage with the historically sedimented entanglements of colonial policies, developmentalist dreams, climate change, urban planning, and state initiatives and describe how new urban geographies of capitalist accumulation are spatially negotiated and contested in Asia’s urbanizing frontiers. By moving beyond the landscape of the city, the panel prioritizes agrarian spaces and relations as critical points of entry to revisit the agrarian-urban question. (Chari 2004, Hart 1998, Roy 2016)
