Geography instruction within teacher preparation programs is largely absent. To remedy this problem, a collaborative group of geographers and teacher preparation faculty has identified potential opportunities and impediments (both structural and political) and created a model for change. The model charts a pathway for 1) inventorying geography coursework that fulfill the general education core; 2) identifying opportunities within the pre-service requirements where geography is currently missing; 3) building relationships between geographers and teacher education faculty; and 4) working toward geography education-specific coursework. Recognizing the variability among institutions and requirements from one state to another, the group has piloted the model with institutions in four states. Presented in this session are the preliminary results and future directions.
