As a primary objective of sustainable transport planning, it seems important to recognise accessibility as a basic prerequisite for participation in society. But how is the urban accessibility perceived by its inhabitants and which interactions between perceived accessibility and realized travel behavior can be identified? An essential objective of our research is to improve existing accessibility modelling on a local level by taking perceptions of the environment and accessibility into account.
We used a multi-method study design and conducted surveys in an investigation area in Hamburg, Germany. We analyzed accessibility that is objectively measured (Walkscore) with the accessibility that is subjectively experienced and their individual attitudes by the inhabitants in the investigation area.
The presentation will focus on the following objectives:
• A comprehensive understanding of perceived accessibility and its influencing factors
• The role of attitudes regarding perceived accessibility and the realized travel behavior
By using regression models and structural equation modelling we intend to examine multiple relations within a set of variables, in which variables can function as an outcome variable and at the same time as a predicting variable in a different explanatory approach.
First results of the multivariate regression models and the structural equation model indicate that the perception of the built environment, individual restrictions, as well as the perception of safety has a considerable influence on perceived accessibility. This also influences the realized travel behavior with resulting consequences for the individual health.
