With the implementation of the strategy of “Going Global” and the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises are accelerating the pace of integration into economic globalization. Although China’s foreign direct investment has become a hot topic in the academic field both at home and abroad, domestic economic geography studies about the foreign direct investment of Chinese multinational corporations are still relatively few or have just begun. In view of this, this article reviews the research literature of foreign direct investment from home and abroad based on the relationship perspective, and holds that the traditional theory still has a role in explaining the foreign investment of Chinese enterprises, but it must be supplemented by the unique variables of China. The paper focuses on the impact of formal relation networks and informal relation networks on foreign direct investment, considering overseas Chinese networks as the key variables affecting China’s foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia. Some research directions for Chinese corporations’ outward investment with Chinese characteristics are proposed: (1) Constructing the theoretical framework of foreign direct investment based on Chinese characteristics, (2) Doing empirical research on foreign direct investment of Chinese enterprises based on formal and informal “relation” perspectives.
