In November and December of 2019, Bougainville, a region of Papua New Guinea, held a non-binding referendum to choose between independence or greater autonomy within Papua New Guinea. This paper with look at the history of the conflict and the peace accords that led to the referendum. Next, it will examine the results of the referendum. Finally, the paper will explore the future political developments in the region.
