The Influence of China's High-Speed Railway Construction on The Quantity and Utilization Intensity of Urban Land

In China, large-scale and rapid high-speed railway construction has made it not only the backbone of the comprehensive transportation system and the main mode of medium and long distance travel, but also an important factor guiding urban development. This study employed difference-in-difference(DID) models to quantitatively analyze whether high-speed railway leads to urban land expansion and land use intensity change. We observed: (1)The impact of high-speed railway construction on urban land use can be analyzed from both macro and micro aspects. (2)The construction of high-speed railway generally promotes the expansion of urban land in China.(3)The location and city scale of high-speed railway stations are the key factors that lead to the difference in the effect of high-speed railway on urban land expansion and intensity.(4) Excessive establishment of high-speed railway stations far away from urban centers in small and medium-sized cities may lead to the decrease of urban land use intensity.According to the above research results, we believe that the government should fully consider the impact of high-speed rail construction on urban land expansion and urban land use intensity when carrying out high-speed rail construction.
