Livelihoods of most people in Nigeria tend to be vulnerable to climate and its variability due to high exposure and sensitivity to climate hazards, combined with low adaptive capacity. Although weather and climate information and services are critical inputs for effective climate risk management, the quality and use of climate information and science is often not well developed in Nigeria. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is the prime national source for high-quality weather and climate observations, saddled with the responsibility to observe, collate, collect, process and disseminate all meteorological data and information. Despite that, there exist significant gaps in the quality and availability of climate information to users. This study aimed at developing a practical and sustainable tool for effective weather and climate services and information communication between the Nigerian Met office, related agencies and end users. Key informant interviews and semi-structured questionnaires were deployed targeting chief executive officers and key personnel of related governmental agencies and end users. The study has developed a more feasible and sustainable conceptual model that will help in effective weather and climate information dissemination in the country. In order to maximize the societal benefits the model ensures that a good interaction between providers and users of climate information is developed and maintained. The study also provided information on how forecasts from weekly to seasonal time scales can be effectively communicated, understood and combined with local knowledge and expertise to reduce uncertainty about adaptation options to weather variability.
