Based on the knowledge base theory,we matched the synthetic, analytical and symbolic knowledge bases with inventions, utility models and designs, and calculated the pattern of knowledge space and evolution of that in China with provincial patents, the main findings are as follows: (1) from the perspective of knowledge scale and knowledge intensity, there is a law of gradual decline from east to west and from south to north about the knowledge spatial pattern of China, showing the differential characteristics of North-South and East-West as a whole; (2) about the spatial distribution of knowledge structure, there are characteristics of coexistence of analytical knowledge and symbolic knowledge in most of the eastern provinces, there are the characteristics of coexistence of synthetic and cultural symbolic knowledge in most of the central provinces, while the symbolic knowledge base dominated in western provinces;(3)the most of eastern regions had experienced the process of transformation from synthetic knowledge base to analytical knowledge base, and there is a trend of symbolic knowledge base transformation now, while the central and western regions have experienced the process of transformation from synthetic knowledge base to analytical knowledge base.
