Typology of Territorial Dispute and Political Dynamism

Authors: Woondo Choi*, Northeast Asian History Foundation
Topics: Political Geography
Session Type: Paper
Presentation File: No File Uploaded

Existing studies on territorial disputes do not differentiate the types of territorial borders which two or more conflicting actors share, such as land borders, maritime borders, and borders concerned with colonialism. Studies on borders in IR field has been developing various hypotheses on the chances of dispute occurrence, probability of conflict contagion, odds of conflict resolution, etc., but they lack the elaboration on the impact of the different types of borders. This study may help to figure out the characteristics of territorial disputes in East Asia, which can be categorized as maritime territorial disputes. If only we have some clues on this question, we can estimate the possibility of conflict resolution over the island in East Asia.
