AI and A Tale of Two Counties

Authors: Ben Gardiner*, University of Cambridge
Topics: Economic Geography, Urban and Regional Planning
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, County, Impact Analysis
Session Type: Paper
Presentation File: No File Uploaded

This paper looks at the local implications of a global mega trend (the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence and its effect on the labour market). Firstly it traces the effects of AI through a macro-sectoral econometric model of the US economy (E3-US), which incorporates price and substitution effects by 60 sectors. Then it takes these sectoral findings and runs them through a localised economy impact model at US county level to contrast two areas which are likely to see differing effects on their jobs markets and wider implications and multiplier effects that could be felt in supply-chain sectors.
