Medium to very large river basins has been neglected in morphometry studies because of large volumes of databases and maps required. Geographic Information Systems have helped to break these barriers. This study analyzed and compared morphometric parameters of two medium-sized river basins within the West African sub-region with a similar climate, terrain, land cover, settlement expansion and colonial history. The study assessed the level of land degradation regarding erosivity and erodibility. Morphometric and LULC analysis was conducted using SRTM DEM (30 m resolution) and Landsat satellite imagery in Arc-GIS 10.7 and Erdas Imagine 15, respectively. Results show that the Pra river is a 6th order basin, while the Cross river is a 7th order basin. Both rivers exhibit a dendritic pattern, taking their rise from nearby mountains and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. The Pra and Cross rivers have a basin area 23,156km²/52,472km²; basin length 6738km/15680km; bifurcation ratio 1.8/1.8; drainage density 0.3/0.3. Apart from the similarities in morphometric properties, both basins have suffered massive deforestation and urbanization since 1986 hence the high Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, reduced rainfall and land cover. The paper recommends the need to prioritize the study of large river basins across regions to monitor degradation and holistic management.
