Urban landscapes have unique climates and are warmer due to human activities when compared to their rural counterpart. A common measure to examine Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is through temperature readings, and this is typically done by examining the temperature differences between the urban and rural environments at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. The purpose of this study is to examine the UHI effect for Kent, Ohio and the surrounding area in Portage County in Northeast Ohio for a 12-month period from December 2019 through December 2020. To obtain temperature readings, this study uses a temperature probe to collect continuous temperature readings weekly along a 28.9 km (18mi) route by motor vehicle in the study area. Using a GPS application called Strava, temperature data from the probe are given coordinates along the route and are mapped and also evaluated using R. Furthermore, at specific locations along the route, individual readings of air and surface temperature, pressure, cloud cover, and wind speeds are recorded to evaluate the seasonal trends in land cover types between the urban and rural environments. Based on preliminary results in December 2019, the temperature probe showed a 3 °C difference between Kent, Ohio and the surrounding rural area along the route. To improve our understanding of the UHI effect, data will continue to be collected for the remainder of the study period. The methods used in this study will help to evaluate the UHI effect spatially and seasonally between the urban and rural environments.
