In search of better opportunities, more than a 1000persons from rural India moves to Delhi every day. Along with themselves they also bring along illiteracy, myths and unexplained traditions. A lot of rural traditions involve women and are discriminatory in nature. Menstruation is one such myth which they bring with them to the city. Illiteracy, poverty and blind beliefs, make the women suffer the most, especially during their menstruation.
They use husk, dirty rags and waste material during their periods. Most of the girls drop out of school due to absence of any proper way to manage the blood flow. Ignorance and social taboos have driven these women to the brink of self life endangerment. In many minority communities, wearing a panty was not allowed, making it difficult for them to wear pads, thereby they drop out of school immediately on puberty.
A primary work aimed at free availability of sanitary pads and enlightening the women about their use, personal hygiene and other issues brought forward other issues related to urban poverty and its vicious cycle. It also revealed that for the women of the household, a kilogram of vegetables was more important than buying a packet of sanitary pads for herself. The conclusions drawn have many dimensions – role of government in ensuring free and compulsory education to all is most important necessity of the times and is the only solution to improve the quality of life of these women.
