In 2019, Kenya experienced a range of extreme drought and flood events that triggered negative environmental, social, and economic impacts such as crop failure, loss of livestock, water shortages, migrations, forest fires, property damage, and loss of human life. This study, therefore, seeks to examine the likely causes and impacts of these weather events in Eastern Africa using satellite remote sensing. Remotely-sensed data derived from Landsat 8, MODIS, and Sentinel-2 were used to generate drought indicators such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). Results from this study show the extent in which extreme weather affected the region which is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Consequently, understanding the spatial and temporal patterns of droughts and floods in the region can assist with future preparation and mitigation planning.
